Valentine’s Day

It seems to be the talk of virtually everywhere, but Asda has brought out a Valentine’s card that costs a measly 8p! This links to my last article, as the car is emblazoned with ASDA SMART PRICE over the front, and is written in txt spk. Everyone, especially the women, is complaining that this card is pure profiteering and anyone who buys it is a cheapskate. Well, now over 60% of Valentine’s cards are sent as free e-cards! So, rather than actually get out of the house and buy card, people are sending free, thoughtless cards, yet people don’t moan they are cheap! Also, if you get one of those cards and want to be optimistic, just think that there is more money for presents… OK, there probably isn’t but hey, live in hope.

Now today everyone will be publishing lists about Valentine’s day, and how it stems from a festival held in Rome on February 15th celebrating the gods Lupercus and Faunus, as well as the founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus. They will also explain there was a large feast, and after that names were drawn out of hats, and those picked were put into pairs and had to stay together til next year, hence the romantic connections. Finally they will state that the name Valentine’s Day stems from a priest (called Valentine probably) who defied a law about soldiers remaining bachelors, and was then put to death on February 14th. The festival was moved a day forward and was then celebrated. Some may also extend to inform you that over 1 billion Valentine’s cards are sent each year worldwide. In order of popularity cards are given to:

  1. Teachers
  2. Children
  3. Mothers
  4. Wives
  5. Girlfriends

I, however, will do no such thing, and therefore bring you a list of facts about Pink Floyd.

  • They were formed in 1965 in Cambridge.
  • They sold over 175 million albums worldwide.
  • The band evolved from an earlier band, which was (at various times) called Sigma 6, The Meggadeaths and The Screaming Abdabs.
  • They performed at Live8 on July 2nd 2005.
  • Their album cover for Wish You Were Here was recently voted the most memorable in the world.
  • Many thousands of references to the band have been made in TV shows, making them one of the most mentioned in the world.
  • The release of Floyd albums also seem to predict stock market crashes. The last 12 releases have been on crashes, and 2 were on the lowest ever FTSE ratings.

There you go, no Valentine’s day stuff at all :)
