Wales has come to my attention a few times recently for several different reason. Firstly, the diaries provided by our school. The publishers cleverly decided to include any important events on certain days (Easter Sunday, Hallowe’en, Chinese New Year, etc). This is similar to my little clanedar thing on the right, but far less accurate and usually useless. For example (now I reach the point) on 1st March, my diary cleverly points out that it is St David’s Day. It unfortunately finishes off this spectacular display of usefulness with the following: (Patron Saint Of Scotland) Worryingly, they have also put on 30th November the correct Patron Saint of Scotland, St Andrew. The Welsh have been completely ignored. I therefore do not trust a single thing in there now, not even the days of the week. I wouldn’t be surprised if they went up to the 31st of February.
My next point: Wales has become a standard unit of measurement. Various things are now being expressed in terms of Walses:
- […] an area of forest the size of Wales is being burned […]
- […] the number of elephants in the Kruger has nearly doubled - about 14000 are now estimated to roam freely across an area the size of Wales […]
- […] 1400 extra troops, spread over an area four times the size of Wales […]
- […] 150 such subglacial lakes have been discovered; Lake Vostok, at 15690km2, about three-quarters the size of Wales […]
- Roughly the size of Wales, Kruger National Park […]
- In many respects, time has, in fact, stood still in the tiny province (only about half the size of Wales) […]
This is also used along with different areas, depending on the target audience. For example, in America, Texas and Rhode Island are used to represent large and small areas respectively. On the continent, Belgium (despite being the rudes word known to man) is frequently used for the purpose of expressing areas. A handy conversion table has been assembled for you below.
| Rhode Islands | Waleses | Belgiums | Texases | |
| Rhode Island | 1.00 | 0.19 | 0.11 | 0.01 |
| Wales | 5.19 | 1.00 | 0.59 | 0.03 |
| Belgium | 7.62 | 1.47 | 1.00 | 0.04 |
| Texas | 173.84 | 33.51 | 22.82 | 1.00 |
I am sure that will be of virtually no use whatsoever to you. Goodbye.

Hi
I’ve been reading your blog and I’d really like to include it in a feature I’m writing on teenagers who blog. I think you write really well and it would be great to have it in the piece.
I was wondering if you would be up for having a picture next to an extract of your blog? There are going to be about 12 different bloggers on the page so don’t worry, the picture will be small.
I’m writing this piece up on Tuesday, March 6, so let me know if you can take part,
Also, if any other teenage bloggers out there fancy being in the piece please drop me a line!
Speak soon hopefully,
Kate
